Define exactly which file extensions belong in which folders. Filed ships with sensible defaults for Documents, Images, Videos, Audio, Archives, Code, and more — and you can create fully custom categories with your own name, destination path, and extension list. Categories can be toggled on or off individually, reordered by drag-and-drop, and imported or exported as a portable settings file so your setup is never locked to one machine.
Before a single file is touched, Filed builds a complete preview of every planned action — showing you the source path, destination path, and the category it matched. You can review the full list, spot anything unexpected, and only proceed when you are satisfied. This preview step is not optional — it is the default starting point of the workflow, ensuring you are always informed before bulk changes happen.
Every time Filed runs an organization pass, it captures a JSON snapshot of the file state before anything moves. These snapshots are stored in a dedicated backup folder and can be browsed, compared, and restored from directly inside the app. If a rule was set up incorrectly or a folder ended up in the wrong place, you can roll back to any prior snapshot. You are never one bad run away from an unrecoverable mess.
Critical system directories and user-defined folders can be flagged as protected, preventing Filed from ever touching them during an organization run. The app also ships with conservative defaults — it will not overwrite existing files without prompting, it renames conflicts automatically (e.g., report.txt becomes report_1.txt), and every destructive action requires an explicit confirmation step.
The middle panel provides a fast file search tool that indexes your source directory and lets you locate files by name, extension, or keyword in seconds. Results are displayed with their full path, size, and modification date. You can open, rename, delete, move, or zip files directly from the search results without leaving the app — no need to context-switch to Windows Explorer for routine file tasks.
Filed includes a built-in scheduler that lets you define a time interval and a destination folder for fully automated organization runs. Once configured, the scheduler runs silently in the background and organizes new files as they appear, according to your active category rules. Each scheduled run is still logged to the Activity Log, so you always have a clear record of what was moved and when — even when you were not watching.
Every operation — preview builds, file moves, skipped items, conflicts, errors, and recovery actions — is written to the in-app Activity Log in real time. The log is timestamped, filterable, and exportable as a plain text file. If something goes wrong or a file ends up in an unexpected place, the Activity Log is your first diagnostic tool. It is designed to make Filed fully auditable, with no hidden behavior.
The right panel includes a drive storage scanner that measures per-drive usage and displays a live storage bar broken down by category. The Tree Map tool generates a full text tree of any folder you select, with breadcrumb navigation and drill-down browsing for large directories. It helps you understand exactly what is taking up space before you reorganize — so you can make informed decisions rather than guesses.
