Core Features

Designed for real file management, not toy automation.

Filed is built around a layered set of tools that cover the full file organization workflow — from defining rules to executing moves to recovering from mistakes. Here is a detailed breakdown of every major capability.

Rule-Based Category System

Define exactly which file extensions belong in which folders. Filed ships with sensible defaults for Documents, Images, Videos, Audio, Archives, Code, and more — and you can create fully custom categories with your own name, destination path, and extension list. Categories can be toggled on or off individually, reordered by drag-and-drop, and imported or exported as a portable settings file so your setup is never locked to one machine.

Preview Before Every Move

Before a single file is touched, Filed builds a complete preview of every planned action — showing you the source path, destination path, and the category it matched. You can review the full list, spot anything unexpected, and only proceed when you are satisfied. This preview step is not optional — it is the default starting point of the workflow, ensuring you are always informed before bulk changes happen.

Automatic Snapshots and Full Recovery

Every time Filed runs an organization pass, it captures a JSON snapshot of the file state before anything moves. These snapshots are stored in a dedicated backup folder and can be browsed, compared, and restored from directly inside the app. If a rule was set up incorrectly or a folder ended up in the wrong place, you can roll back to any prior snapshot. You are never one bad run away from an unrecoverable mess.

Protected Paths and Safe Defaults

Critical system directories and user-defined folders can be flagged as protected, preventing Filed from ever touching them during an organization run. The app also ships with conservative defaults — it will not overwrite existing files without prompting, it renames conflicts automatically (e.g., report.txt becomes report_1.txt), and every destructive action requires an explicit confirmation step.

Built-In File Search and Browser

The middle panel provides a fast file search tool that indexes your source directory and lets you locate files by name, extension, or keyword in seconds. Results are displayed with their full path, size, and modification date. You can open, rename, delete, move, or zip files directly from the search results without leaving the app — no need to context-switch to Windows Explorer for routine file tasks.

Automated Scheduling

Filed includes a built-in scheduler that lets you define a time interval and a destination folder for fully automated organization runs. Once configured, the scheduler runs silently in the background and organizes new files as they appear, according to your active category rules. Each scheduled run is still logged to the Activity Log, so you always have a clear record of what was moved and when — even when you were not watching.

Activity Log and Status Transparency

Every operation — preview builds, file moves, skipped items, conflicts, errors, and recovery actions — is written to the in-app Activity Log in real time. The log is timestamped, filterable, and exportable as a plain text file. If something goes wrong or a file ends up in an unexpected place, the Activity Log is your first diagnostic tool. It is designed to make Filed fully auditable, with no hidden behavior.

Storage Analysis and Tree Map

The right panel includes a drive storage scanner that measures per-drive usage and displays a live storage bar broken down by category. The Tree Map tool generates a full text tree of any folder you select, with breadcrumb navigation and drill-down browsing for large directories. It helps you understand exactly what is taking up space before you reorganize — so you can make informed decisions rather than guesses.

FAQ

Common pre-purchase questions

Does Filed require an internet connection to run?

No. Filed is a fully offline, locally-installed Windows application. It does not connect to any server during normal use. An internet connection is only used when the app checks for version updates or when you access your download link — neither of which is required for the core file organization features to work.

Can I preview actions before any files are moved?

Yes — and this is a core part of how Filed is designed to work. Every organization run starts with a preview step that shows you the exact source and destination for every file that will be moved. You review the list, confirm it looks correct, and only then proceed. You will never come back to a reorganized folder and wonder what happened.

What happens if a file already exists at the destination?

Filed handles naming conflicts automatically and safely. If a file named report.txt already exists in the destination folder, the incoming file is renamed to report_1.txt (and so on for subsequent conflicts). Existing files are never silently overwritten. The conflict resolution is logged in the Activity Log so you always know what was renamed and why.

Can I undo an organization run if something went wrong?

Yes. Before every organization pass, Filed automatically saves a JSON snapshot of the pre-move file state to a dedicated backup folder. You can open the History tab at any time, browse all previous snapshots, and restore to any one of them. This rollback process is handled entirely within the app — no manual file hunting required.

Will my custom categories and settings carry over after an update?

Yes. Your configuration — categories, extension rules, protected paths, scheduler settings — is stored in a local config file that persists across app updates. Filed also supports exporting and importing your settings as a portable file, so you can back up your exact setup or transfer it to a new machine.

Does Filed work on both Windows 10 and Windows 11?

Yes. Filed is tested and supported on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. It requires no special system permissions for the core features. Administrator access is only needed if you choose to enable the optional Windows right-click context menu integration.

Will future updates cost extra?

No. A single one-time purchase includes all future updates to Filed for the lifetime of the product. There are no subscription fees, no tier upgrades, and no feature paywalls. When improvements, bug fixes, and new features ship, they are delivered to every existing license holder at no additional cost.

What is the refund policy?

Windows Security Notice

Why you may see a SmartScreen warning

Important download transparency

Filed is a newer independent Windows application and is still building reputation with Microsoft SmartScreen. Because of that, Windows may show a "Windows protected your PC" prompt the first time you open the installer or app. This warning is expected for new software and does not automatically mean the file is unsafe.

Official Download Link Only SmartScreen Reputation Builds Over Time Do Not Run Suspicious Files
  1. If you downloaded Filed from the official purchase/download link on this website, verify the file name and source before opening the file.
  2. If SmartScreen appears, click More info and then Run anyway only when you trust the source.
  3. If anything looks suspicious (unexpected file name, different source, or unusual behavior), stop and contact support first.

About Filed

Built by one person, with care.

Who built Filed?

Filed is created and maintained by a solo independent developer. The product is intentionally focused on practical reliability: clear previews before actions, safety snapshots before changes, and transparent logging so users can trust what the app is doing.

This release reflects months of iterative development, hands-on testing, and real-world hardening for edge cases that matter in everyday file management.

Feedback is welcome.

User feedback is a core part of how Filed improves. Bug reports, feature requests, and workflow suggestions are reviewed directly and used to prioritize upcoming updates.

If something feels confusing or could work better, feedback is encouraged. Real usage insights help shape the roadmap and improve reliability over time.

A note on using the app safely

  • Always use the Preview Changes step before running your first organization pass on any new folder.
  • Use the History tab to review and restore snapshots if a move did not go as expected.
  • Mark any folder containing critical or irreplaceable data as a Protected Path to prevent it from being touched.
  • Keep independent backups of any data you cannot afford to lose, as with any file management tool regardless of brand.

Current launch price: $20 one-time with lifetime updates.
